The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the UAE Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) start workshops at the ICAO Blockchain Aviation Summit and Exhibition

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the ICAO Blockchain Summit and Exhibition is between April 2- 4, 2019 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Abu Dhabi with the participation of more than 800 participants from 90 countries

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organization started the workshops as part of the activities of the ICAO Blockchain Aviation Summit and Exhibition in Abu Dhabi from 2-4 April 2019 while the official opening of the summit will be on Wednesday, April 3, 2019

Through workshops, the Summit aims to spread the benefits of the expertise of the specialists at the Summit and to benefit from their practical experiences. The workshops discuss a number of topics, which revolve around what makes the blockchain technology disruptive and how it disrupts the travel and transport sector, and utilizing the expertise and knowledge of leading academics and executives

The workshops discussed various topics such as the potential of Blockchain Technology, strengthening the capabilities of countries in terms of developing oversight capacities, the needs of adopting blockchain in aviation, and the challenges of adopting this technology

The workshop were held by experts and academics from the aviation and blockchain technology sector from international organizations, global companies and universities such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Nanyang Technological University, the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI), the Civil Aviation Services Organization (CANSO) PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Authority for Civil Aviation, said: “Through this event, ICAO and UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) aim at accelerating the adoption of Blockchain through the entire aviation eco-system from aircrafts and other assets financing, to business operations including passenger experience, to contracts management, records keeping and security”

Further, the summit aims to introduce transformational commercial, communication, and efficiency potentials of Blockchain technology to the global aviation industry as well as gathering Blockchain solution providers and business leaders seeking to utilize Blockchain as an enabling technology in aviation

The event has a strategic importance as it serves as a platform to promote global collaboration to unlock the potential of Blockchain technology to sustain a safe, secure and efficient civil aviation system. The 2019 event themed “Blockchain: unlock the potential” will offer to the international aviation community the necessary awareness joined with experience about the Blockchain technology

Selecting the UAE is a testament to our leadership’s continuing efforts towards investing in new technologies across different domains including the aviation sector and in maintaining strong partnerships between the government and the private sector, and the continuous endeavors in exploring methods to improve aviation business practices in a dynamic and thriving environment. The event will bring together national and international aviation bodies, industry stakeholders and gurus, who will explore the Blockchain potential to deliver innovative solutions that benefit the entire industry

Other goals for the summit include promoting cooperation, collaboration, knowledge and information sharing among Blockchain entrepreneurs. The event will also provide a common understanding among ICAO Member States intending to apply Blockchain technology, foster a worldwide governance framework to accelerate adoption of Blockchain technology in aviation and provide solutions to overcome challenges in establishing safe, secure, resilient and efficient interfaces across the multidisciplinary civil aviation system. This will ultimately support new ICAO initiatives to address its Strategic Objectives and UN Sustainable Development Goals
